Talk:Icons in Roguelikes
While the essence of this article is useful, there are some problems, esp. concerning an ongoing confusion between the different words "icon" and "symbol". It culminates in this part:
"It doesn't matter how the weapon really looks like or is used like -- it increases your attack power, damage, anything -- it's a symbol, an icon."
"It" in this quote refers to names which are considered to be "icons" or "symbols" by the author. At least from a semiotic point of view this is very difficult to say. I suggest to read some introductory texts about semiotics in general and Peirce's theories on icons, symbols and indexes in special.
