7DRLPC for 2009

Welcome to the third Seven-Day-Roguelike Playing Competition, a contest established by Antoine from rgrd!

The goal of the 7DRL Playing Competition is for entrants to play, provide feedback on, and (if possible) complete as many Seven Day Roguelikes as possible, within a single week.

The week of the challenge will be from Wednesday 25 to Tuesday 31 March. Everyone who wishes to enter the competition should announce themselves on rec.games.roguelike.misc (RGRM) by 25 April.

We will create a thread on RGRM for the contest. Players should post to this thread to score points in the competition - including mini-reviews (25 points), victory posts (50 points), and bug reports (10-25 points). Detailed scoring is described below.

What is a Seven Day Roguelike?

A Seven Day Roguelike (7DRL) is a roguelike created in seven days. This means the author stopped writing code one hundred and sixty eight hours after they started writing code. More details can be found at the RogueBasin article: 7DRL

The 2009 7DRL competition took place within the week of March 7th to March 15th. The outcome of the contest has been written up at 7DRL Contest 2009.

In brief, 45 developers took up the challenge; of these brave souls, 25 managed to successfully complete the challenge and post a new, complete, playable roguelike. A further 4 completed 7DRLs in a week other than the competition week.

The goal posed by the 7DRL Playing Competition is to play, provide feedback on, and (if possible) complete as many of this year's 7DRLs as possible. Entrants can score 7DRL points by doing this. (7DRL points have no cash value and can only be exchanged for an equal value of 7DRL points.)

We will create an official Contest thread on RGRM - please post contest entries there.

The first condition for scoring any points for a game is to publish a mini-review on RGRM. Without the mini-review, you can't score in any other categories. Please try to be positive in your review, and bear in mind that these games were the product of just one week's work. The hope is that they will incorporate a cool idea and/or entertain you for a few minutes, not that they will be as polished as Angband or ADOM.

Points are awarded as follows:

  • A mini-review on RGRM at least 25 words of constructive comments: 25 points
  • A victory post on RGRM (for games with a victory condition): +50

points

  • First bug report on RGRM of reproducible non-crashing/game ending bug: +10 points
  • First bug report on RGRM of reproducible crashing/game ending bug: +25

points

A player can only score once for each category for each game.

The completed 7DRLs are linked at at 7DRL Contest 2009 and 2009 Out of Challenge 7DRLs.

Anyone who attempts all 25 can also score by playing games from 7DRL.

Of course you can play the games any time, not just between 25 and 31 March, but only posts within this time period will be counted for the 7DRL Playing Competition.

Happy 7DRLing!
