It started by combining the NetHack variant [[SLASH]] (by Tom Proudfoot) with Larry Stewart-Zerba's Wizard Patch, with various additional changes since.

SLASH'EM can be described as NetHack with some added features, such as:
* New [[class]]es
* A longer [[dungeon]]
* Many special [[level]]s (like the Sokoban levels)
* Lots of new [[monster]]s and [[item]]s

Note that Sokoban levels are among the features that have been adopted into Nethack from SLASH'EM.
