Elona is a Japanese graphical roguelike (no longer under active development). It has a main storyline and randomly generated side-quests. The developer has stated that his goal is to make a less serious roguelike, focusing on making the game fun and humorous instead of implementing realistic mechanics.

Gameplay

The gameplay is more forgiving than in traditional roguelikes. The main character never completely dies, death only reduces your abilities and resources. Most of the areas are pre-generated but some of the dungeons are randomly generated each time the player enters them. Item names and abilities are randomized, sometimes resulting in unusual and sometimes hilarious combinations. Most of the graphics and sounds are borrowed from external sources under a free license.

Races

Normal races: Yerles, Euldernas, Fairies, Dwarves, Jueres, Eleans, Snails, Liches, Goblins, Golems and Mutants.

More races are available by changing the extraRace value in config.txt to 1. These races haven't been extensively tested and aren't recommended for serious playing.

A news release on the J part of the offical Elona forums has announced that Noa has decided to cease participation in developing Elona. However, he made the source code available to anyone who wants it, without licensing restrictions, via a time-limited download link.

However, on the official Elona forums, there are quite a few beginning continuation projects, as well as several projects whom plan on rewriting Elona into other programming languages.

Development has continued by several developers under the Elona+ name. They took the source code, and carried on with development. It contains additions (new world parts) bugfixes, and more.
