Description

GodoRogue is a role-playing game with a strong emphasis on item discovery and usage as well as tactical combat. It features a simple yet intricate combat system that allows for a vast array of choices: Should you engage that monster in close combat or opt for a ranged attack? Should you use your last identification scroll on this potion, or should you drink it and hope it's not poison? Every decision depends on the situation and the kind of character you evolve into. Moreover, you'll have the opportunity to retreat into the labyrinthine corridors to take on foes one by one or use your vast arcane knowledge to obliterate them with magic.

GodoRogue is born from a tradition of role-playing games known as coffee-break roguelikes. These trace their lineage back to a game named Rogue. Written in an era before computers boasted graphics, Rogue used screen symbols to represent a dungeon teeming with monsters and treasures, with the layout being randomly generated every time you played. Rogue also introduced permadeath: you only have one life, and every decision counts; one misstep and you're back to the beginning. Furthermore, it had a system of unidentified items whose powers players had to discern for themselves. GodoRogue carries forward all these features. While it may be more advanced in certain respects, it remains at its core simple, straightforward, and accessible.

The Basics

You will assume the role of a warrior, thief, mage, rogue... undertaking the unthinkable: Descending into Sakku's dungeon, reaching the 26th floor, securing the Amulet of Yendor, and then making your way back to the surface. Along this perilous journey, you'll need to uncover potent artifacts, master spells, and perhaps even seek the favor of the Gods. Countless monsters await their end by your hand. Upon character creation, you're thrust right into the vast dungeons of Sakku, unarmed with only a handful of meager supplies. The best way to grasp the game's foundation is by perusing this tutorial. Remember, you can always press (H or F1) in-game to access the help screen. Much of the randomness in GodoRogue is generated through simulated dice rolls. The terminology XdY means rolling X dice, each with Y faces, and summing up the displayed results. For instance, rolling three eight-faced dice is denoted as 3d8.

To play GodoRogue, a keyboard is all you need for movement. However, to truly survive and thrive in the dungeon, you'll need an in-depth knowledge of the game. This guide aims to bridge your knowledge gap. Additionally, there's a separate manual detailing the monsters lurking within the dungeon depths.

Dungeon procedural content

Within certain rooms of the dungeon, you might come across bookshelves, statues, and gravestones. These elements are purely aesthetic, adding layers of lore and fantasy to your adventure.

Bookshelves might reveal snippets of text detailing historical events of the region, such as wars, settlements, artifacts, etc. You might also uncover poems, sonnets, and songs penned by ancient inhabitants, narrating a legend or two.

You'll also find statues, which might represent a fallen hero from a bygone battle, a fearsome monster, or perhaps a deity of the region. Engaging with these structures might grant devotion points, reflecting your reverence for past heroes and regional deities.

Auto-search while exploring the dungeon

The dungeon conceals secrets invisible to the naked eye. You'll need to actively search (s) to attempt to unveil what's hidden. This action affects the 8 tiles surrounding you.

Searching also lets you name objects on the ground, helping you avoid the tedious task of picking up and dropping uninteresting items.

If you're near a trap or secret wall, it will be revealed. Your character has a 20% chance of conducting an automatic search each time you move. The rogue class have 45% chances. Should your character sense something peculiar, you'll feel a tingle in your nose – a cue for you to actively search (s) the area.

Deities and praying system

At any point, you can pray (p) to seek divine intervention. However, the Gods in this realm are fickle and often temperamental. They won't always answer your prayers, and being overly insistent might provoke their ire.

Your level of devotion increases the likelihood of your prayers being heard and answered with a divine blessing. However, be wary! Even with high devotion levels, there's a small chance your God might be in a foul mood and send a curse your way.
