Note that gold rings will damage you if you are allergic to gold (from an encounter with a gold bug). If you are going to fight a gold bug, you may wish to remove gold jewelry in advance.

You can get a fear of silver from eating (e.g. daemon corpse) which has the same effect as the gold allergy but for silver rings.
