A handheld roguelike is a roguelike game for a small electronic device such as a cellphone, a video game system, or a PDA.

Even a system capable of running Windows or Linux does not guarantee a good roguelike experience. The small screen and limited controls of most handhelds mean that, unless careful work is done in UI design, the resulting game can be unplayable.

Some of these games also work on Windows or Linux, either by themselves or with the help of an emulator.

Cell phones

Tip: When you buy a mobile phone, get a smartphone like an iPhone, Android OS, Symbian OS, Palm Treo, BlackBerry, or Windows Mobile device. Smartphones can run a wider variety of software than most cellphones. See the Palm and Windows Mobile sections below.

iPhone cell phones

Palm Treo and Centro cell phones (and other Palm OS devices)

Java Micro Edition (J2ME) enabled devices

Handsets from practically all major manufacturers (except Apple's iPhone) are able to run J2ME games and applications.

Android OS devices

Search for [roguelike] on Google Play. This will give you a more complete list than the list below, sorted either by relevance or popularity.

Traditional roguelikes

Original mobile games

Blackberry Cellphones

Symbian OS

Development of Symbian OS only applications is made using C/C++. Symbian OS is primarily found on smartphones from Nokia. Symbian OS handsets can also run J2ME games and applications

Windows Mobile / Windows CE cell phones

Windows Phone

Game Boy

Game Gear

  • Dragon Crystal. Similar to Fatal Labyrinth on the Genesis (playable on the handheld system Sega Nomad).

Game Boy Color

Game Boy Advance

  • To play the following games, buy an inexpensive Game Boy Advance flash cartridge or download a Game Boy Advance emulator for your PC. NO$GBA[18] is currently one of the more accurate Game Boy Advance emulators for the PC. Perhaps it is also possible to play them using a computer-to-GBA link cable or a Game Boy Advance Movie Player or other such device. You can also play these (and any other Game Boy Advance homebrew applications) on a Nintendo DS via a slot-1 card such as the CycloDS Evolution[19]
  • Monster Gate

Nintendo DS

Nintendo 3DS

Nintendo Switch

PlayStation Portable
