Zangband (also capitalized as ZAngband) is a variant of Angband originally created by Topi Ylinen in 1994. Zangband is based on Angband v2.8.1, and is one of the most successful of the countless variants of Angband.

Description

Instead of being based on J.R.R. Tolkien's books, Zangband revolves around the world of Amber created by Roger Zelazny (hence the name, which is short for Zelazny Angband). Zangband saw many additions to the original Angband, among them a wilderness (a map, outside the town, of countryside with more dungeons), an OAngband-style combat system, and a totally different kind of balance from vanilla Angband.

Versions and platforms

The last development version was v2.7.4c, released on August 1, 2004; this current development version had significant changes compared to the last stable release, v2.6.2 (September 3 2001), and was preferred by many players. A preview release, v2.7.5 Preview I, was released on SourceForge on June 5 2005.

The development team last consisted of Steven Fuerst, Robert Rühlmann, Topi Ylinen, Chris Kern, Eric Bock, Mitsuhiro Itakura and Ross Morgan-Linial; development does not appear to be active anymore as of 2024. The zangband.org website (not updated since 2003) went defunct in mid-2022 and has since been taken over by a domain squatter, though archived versions remain available on archive.org.

Zangband is currently licensed under the same terms as Angband itself. It is one the aims of the current development team to make it entirely GPLable. Zangband runs on the same systems that Angband does, including Unix variants and Linux, DOS, Windows, Mac OS X, and others.

Variants of Zangband include PernAngband and its rewrite, Tales of Middle Earth, as well as Z+Angband. Hengband is a very active distant descendant of Zangband.
