Zangband (also capitalized as ZAngband) is a variant of Angband originally created by Topi Ylinen in 1994. Zangband is one of the most succesful of the countless variants of Angband.
Description
Instead of being based on J.R.R. Tolkien's books, Zangband revolves around the world of Amber created by Roger Zelazny (hence the name, which is short for Zelazny Angband). Zangband saw many additions to the original Angband, among them a wilderness (a map, outside the town, of countryside with more dungeons), an OAngband-style combat system, and a totally different kind of balance from vanilla Angband.
Versions and platforms
The current version is v2.7.4c, released from August 1, 2004. The current development version, which has had significant changes compared to the last stable release, is preferred by many players. Lead developer Steven Fuerst returned to Zangband in late 2005; however, 10 years later in 2015, it would appear development is no longer active.
Zangband is currently licensed under the same terms as Angband itself. It is one the aims of the current development team to make it entirely GPLable. Zangband runs on the same systems that Angband does, including Unix variants and Linux, DOS, Windows, Mac OS X, and others.
Variants of Zangband include PernAngband and its rewrite, Tales of Middle Earth.
