Jareth's Labyrinth is a free and open source roguelike by Walter D. Pullen. It is one of the scripts that comes with the maze generation program Daedalus.
Description
Jareth's Labyrinth is inspired by the 1986 movie "Labyrinth", and includes many of the locations and characters. You have 13 hours in which to solve the Labyrinth, and face Jareth at its center. You don't have to have seen the movie to play, but it certainly helps. It takes place inside a giant maze, and is designed to give you the mysterious feeling of being within a life size maze. Classic roguelike characteristics include turn based, grid movement, permadeath (although there's only a few ways to die), and randomized content such as the maze passages being different each time you play. Differences between Jareth's Labyrinth and most other roguelikes include:
- Graphics primarily in 3D and first person perspective: This is similar to Dragonslayer, The Hunger Games, and Grippy Socks, other roguelikes implemented in Daedalus. To avoid the mazes being too difficult, there's an overhead map view you can optionally switch to.
- Simple interface: There's little in the way of inventory or combat. Most of the game is solving the mazes, and interacting with the characters in the right way to get access to the next location.
- A timer you have to finish within: This timer is based on turns taken, and doesn't take place in real time.
